The extended rear bar of the Phoenix Inn showcases live jazz sessions throughout the week, featuring some of the finest upcoming as well as established musicians in the North of England.

Monday evenings showcase piano lead Quartets featuring great local pianists such as Karl Mullen and Mike Conliffe. Accompanied by a variety of great instrumentalists and vocalists.

Running since 1999, Wednesdays host the legendary open jam session, led by James Lancaster. All players are welcome so why not come along and get involved with the great atmosphere?

The Third Thursday of the month we feature Bad Saloon Blues Band. Heavily influenced by the ‘usual suspects’ – Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Freddie King and the like – but with their own distinctive attacking sound. Bad Saloon: made up of John Hall, Mal Wignall, Pete Hall, and Gaz Cole – all veterans of the Yorkshire music scene – deliver a cool, no-nonsense blend of Chicago Blues and Texas Blues Rock.

Every Friday evening from 8:30pm, we feature the amazing talents of pub piano champion Karl Mullen (and friends) providing a solo piano masterclass in tastes from ‘Madness’ to ‘Mantovani’ and everything in between.

First and Third Sunday Evenings: Proud to have been part of the Phoenix Inn’s jazz journey from the very beginning; The Ian Chalk Quartet brings a vibrant, contemporary take on classic jazz and a deep respect for the tradition of great music making. Providing a much-loved contribution to the welcoming atmosphere that makes The Phoenix Inn such a special home for live music.

Second Sunday Evening: Chris Moore leads a band of contemporary jazz cats, taking many forms from ‘The Funkwits’ to the artists formerly known as ‘The Tradiators’. Whatever the format - the function is wild, free and fun!

Every Fourth Sunday Dan Clarkson and his trio welcome a guest soloist or singer. Expect swinging standards, jazz classics and a few surprises!

The Last Thursday of the month Quizmaster Ben will crave your cranial competence in a far from traditional Pub Quiz!

The pub is also home to a vintage Bar Billiards table and proud to be a longstanding member of the York Bar Billiards Leagues.
